Hello to this lovely new board! I hope the film is done faithfully to the book of Ballet Shes, so am surprised to see Emma Watson up there. I read somewhere that they had trouble with casting of the children. What is wrong with the youth of Great Britain? I would have auditioned for Pauline myself but am a few, no several, alright, many decades too late!

Hi pauline :D! I was surprised to hear that Emma Watson was cast as well. She's not really how I envisaged Pauline. Apparently she's dying her hair white-blonde, though I don't know how much of a difference that will make. But I'm going to have trouble not seeing her as Hermione at first!

Otherwise overall it seems pretty good casting ;D. I'm familiar with most of the actors from seeing them in various roles. I think Emilia Fox as Sylvia will be perfect - that's how I even imagined Sylvia would look. I haven't seen the other "Fossil girls" in anything, I don't think, but they seem to have the right looks for the characters. I read in the casting call that they're dying the Posy actress's hair red.

The picture of the girl playing Petrova looks just right, and I can almost imagine Richard Griffiths playing GUM. I'm not sure about any of the others, because make up and hairstylists can do so much. I'll wait and see ;D

'I wonder,' Petrova looked up 'if other girls had to be one of us, which of us they'd choose to be?'

I realised today that I have seen Yasmin Paige in something - she apparently played Maria in the Sarah Jane Adventures (I'm a bit of a Whovian ;) ). I thought she was very good :). I can imagine her playing Petrova quite well.

Thanks for the photographs. I'm sure they'll act well, as there are so many big names. I see GUM as tall and spindly - Bill Nighy?

Yes, I pictured him tall and thin too - probably the illustrations influencing me. I wonder if they'll give him the wooden leg!

I'm another one who saw GUM as tall and thin, and I imagined Sylvia as older. The Doctors are just as I imagined them, and I really like the idea of Victoria Wood as Nana.

I'm looking forward to seeing how the children do, and the production as a whole.

Wow! I didn't know that they were making a film! Everyone looks fantastic! Although I also imagined GUM to be tall and thin.

I wonder if Mrs Simpson will be in it? I guess they might just not have announced the actress playing her, but she's not really an essential character to the plot, I suppose. They could probably just remove her part and have only Mr Simpson, to cut down on the cast numbers.

I think I pictured Gum as thin also because he was a pretty active man - he'd probably burn up lots of energy with all that travelling and mountain climbing.

I was SOOOOO excited when I heard that a film was being made, I jumped up and down for about 20 minutes. I've always wanted there to be a film. I wish I hadn't missed the auditions, I've always wanted to play a Fossil. I think the casting looks great, the actress playing Posy is suitably cheeky looking. I'm really happy that Victoria Wood is playing Nana as it combines my one of my favourite comedians with one of my favourite books.

I really can't imagine Emma Watson as Pauline, but we'll see... I haven't heard of most of the others.

Yasmin Paige played Young Cosette in the London production of Les Miserables, woohoo! ;D

No, no - Sylvia was dark-haired, in my imagination! And Victoria Wood is too slim for Nana, and arguably not assertive enough (at least, most of the characters she has played so far haven't been assertive). The girl cast as Winifred looks perfect, though, but I can't imagine Emma Watson with straight, very fair hair, which Pauline had.....

Yes, I hope they won't make Nana into a sort of Pursey/Hannah figure. I always felt that despite the "nannie" archetype in some of the books, the Fossils' Nana was always one of the toughest.

ETA: Emma's hair is sort of straight in this photo. Can't quite imagine it as pale blonde yet!
